“The credit belongs to the man in the arena. Whose face is marred by the dust and sweat and blood. Who strives valiantly, who errs and comes short again and again. Who knows the great enthusiams, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause. Who, at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement. And who at worst, if he fails… at least fails while daring greatly”.

For the Templars!

Disclaimers: a) The large majority of this post is based off of purely fantasy-based incidents. i.e. roleplay at my home server of Earthen Ring. b) The misspelling in the word ‘Templars’ is intentional. Don’t hate. Continue reading

Good-bye, Twenty-Thirteen.

Posted in Mental Vagaries on December 30, 2013 by Vagabundo DeMente

Folks, I will admit to feeling less than stellar, as these past weeks of holidays have been both nice and draining on many levels. It is a bittersweet irony that one must suffer in order to celebrate, what with the shopping, the cooking, and often being away from those you most love (which I can only hope it was not your case). We brave it through if only to make the days of those around us worthy of being called celebrations, be it with our presence or with more hefty contributions (those who cook deserve a medal), and as we recover from the so-called holidays we will go into the New Year with (hopefully) renewed dreams and a reinvigorated desire to take the world by storm. At least, that is what I intend.

Everyone shifts to an introspective state of mind to reflect on what the year that departs left, and what the new year (we hope) will bring. Oh, so many dreams often hang from those fresh twelve months ahead of us. How intently we try to pierce the mist and find out… will we make it this time? Will we fail yet again and come crashing down with the pain that it entails? Today I will give you my perspective of past and future. Continue reading

The Lupe Reyes Marathon – Part II

Posted in Cultural Snippets with tags on December 25, 2013 by Vagabundo DeMente

So you began the season dancing and singing to a religious icon… or at least watching. Even tourists can watch the processions, regardless of their religious inclinations. If you’re lucky enough, you caught a reliquia and ate till you felt either satisfied or embarrassed for taking someone else’s food for free (you should not feel embarrassed, as taking free food is entirely the point of a reliquia… but some of us are so overwhelmingly shy!). And the season is only starting! So what’s next? Read on and you’ll see. Continue reading

The Lupe Reyes Marathon – Part I

Posted in Cultural Snippets with tags on December 21, 2013 by Vagabundo DeMente

December’s festive season begins at different times around the world. in the U.S. it begins with Black Friday, in Canada… I’m afraid I have not found out yet. In Mexico, it starts on the 12th of December and ends on the 6th of January, and it is called the Maratón Lupe Reyes (the Lupe Reyes Marathon). Why does it have such a whimsical name? And what are the stages of this festive season? Over the next few days I will provide an inside look on how we Mexicans go about our holiday season. Today, we begin with the starting shot. Is romanticism dead?

Posted in Mental Vagaries on November 17, 2013 by Vagabundo DeMente

Let me start by saying, the internet made me late. I lost connection on Tuesday afternoon and I have not regained it cause my ISP sucks. I had to go elsewhere to get this post out within schedule. If necessary, I will post two posts or three on a given week (one by day, probably) to keep up with my weekly schedule, which I have no intention of abandoning. Only the direst circumstances force me to go on hiatus, and I cling to the belief that never again will I have such hard times as I did back in August in to a lesser degree on September. It truly feels like my life is getting on track, even though the actual destination (if any) is still far away. But at least I don’t feel like I am in a lightless pit anymore. I am, I would say, walking on sunshine.

Anyway, enough digression. Is romanticism dead?  Continue reading

Five Steps Forward, Four Steps Back.

Posted in Mental Vagaries on November 6, 2013 by Vagabundo DeMente

“It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something”.

Friendships come, friendships gone

Posted in Mental Vagaries on August 12, 2013 by Vagabundo DeMente

I have reached a point in my life when i find myself questioning every single relationship (not necessarily romantic) that I have (had). I have gained much, and lost just as much. Sometimes it scares me to think that such is my fate and I will not know enduring relationships. Some other times, I wonder if that might not be the best for those around me and ultimately me.
